Largest ever new build scheme in the North York Moors National Park reaches completion

30th January 2009

Final completion was announced today on a £3million day care centre and supported housing scheme in Esk Valley, on the North York Moors.

The Esk Moors scheme will provide 12 self-contained flats and a substantial day care centre with extensive recreational, health & welfare and catering services for older people from the surrounding rural area; a remote location previously lacking in social housing or community facilities.

The scheme, developed by Abbeyfield UK, took many years of fundraising and campaigning for support, but took just 10 months to build on site. Designed by Burns Architects, the build was project managed by Robinson Low Francis, which also provided quantity surveying services. The first residents are expected to move in during January 2009.

Mark Newberry, partner at Robinson Low Francis, said: “The care homes sector is key for us, and this project in particular has been great to be involved with as it had challenges such a long pre-planning history and a large number of key stakeholders. The brief was to provide superb residential accommodation to those people who would otherwise have had to move far from the area they have lived in for a number of years. The challenge was to handle the project, which is built on a remote and demanding site in a national park, in a sensitive way.”

Tim Chaudhry, of Abbeyfield UK, commented: “We worked with Robinson Low Francis to ensure that the project was completed in a timely fashion. We are really pleased with the resultant housing, which will be a huge benefit for the local community.”
