Women in Property sailing team a force to be reckoned with

15 Sept 2009

The Association of Women in Property (WiP) joined forces with the British Army’s military construction specialists the Royal Engineers for this year’s Little Britain Challenge Cup 10th – 13th September, when Lance Corporal Nathan Fulcher of 22 Engineer Regiment skippered an all female crew.

This was the sixth consecutive campaign for the WiP team which successfully defended the PRC Fewster Cup for 50% Female crew, winning it for the 3rd year in succession; the team also finished joint 10th in Cruising class and in the top 50 overall out of 125 yachts.

In addition, WiP were also the third highest placed Alliance team and had the honour of winning a magnum of champagne for their costumes at the 70’s themed party on the Friday night.

Carol Bell, Senior Project Manager at Robinson Low Francis, drew together a multi-disciplinary team of seven WiP members from all over the UK with backgrounds in Architecture, Project Management and Marketing. Three of the seven were LBCC novices*, with varying sailing and racing experience.

“We hadn’t all sailed together until we headed out into the Solent for the first race but we weren’t short of competitive spirit and, with Nathan’s support, came out fighting!” said Carol Bell.

The team competed in IRC Class 5, sailing the Royal Engineers’ Yacht Club’s Elan 333 ‘Buccaneer’, a last minute change as their original yacht, an X332 also belonging to the Royal Engineers, was dismasted during last month’s 600-mile Fastnet Race.

“Our thanks go to the Royal Engineers for finding us a replacement so swiftly. And thanks too, to Women in Property and to our sponsors whose support enabled us to enter despite the tough economic climate” concludes Carol Bell.
